Sebo K | April 30 | Button Factory

SEBO K [Mobilee, Berlin]
Friday April 30th, Button Factory
Adv Tickets: 10e

Sebo K has long been a key figure in Berlin’s music community, starting his DJ career in the early 90s at Alec Empire’s Bass Terror nights, Berlin’s first UK-style breakbeat parties. By the mid 90s he had discovered his love for Chicago house and Detroit techno—a passion evident to anyone who has heard the vintage depths many of his tracks nod to—and at the turn of the decade began playing regularly at legendary clubs throughout Berlin. Now, thanks to his releases on the mobilee label, he’s becoming an unstoppable force in the electronic music scene. One of his first tracks for mobilee, “Rancho Relaxo”—in collaboration with Anja Schneider—was an instant classic, establishing Sebo (as well as the label itself) as an up-and-coming act worthy of extreme attention. To declare that Sebo has lived up to expectations would be an understatement to say the least.

Despite a relatively sparse discography of original productions, quality over quantity is the name of the game for Sebo K, with each of his productions—from his debut on mobilee to his most recent track, “Diva”—receiving universal acclaim from both DJs and critics alike and cementing his position as first-rate producer. His mix CD Back Up Vol. 01 introduced audiences far and wide to his mixing abilities, effortlessly bridging the worlds of minimal techno and classic deep house with one critic proclaiming it “house that sounds perfectly at home wandering through new provinces.” Alongside his now timeless original productions, Sebo has done remixes for some of the most respected labels and artists on the planet including Poker Flat, Mule Electronic, Radioslave, and Efdemin. Meanwhile, his tracks have appeared on a nearly uncountable number of compilations and mixes by DJs such as M.A.N.D.Y., Richie Hawtin, Steve Bug, Dennis Ferrer, Loco Dice, and Dixon.

His love for soulful, deep vibes combined with his ability to transition seamlessly between minimal techno and straight house—and an uncanny ability to blur the lines between the two—has reinforced the importance of house in an age seemingly inundated by techno lovers. His residency at Berlin’s Watergate in tandem with constant gigs at high-profile venues around the world has demonstrated that Sebo’s DJ abilities are on par with his exceptional production skills, and that his seemingly endless string of successes isn’t likely to end any time soon.

Maurice Fulton – Radio Special

—————————————-
Tune into the Box Deluxe show 1900 – 2100 hrs Saturday 20th for a Maurice Fulton Special on www.powerfm.org.

—————————————–

Maurice Fulton. In a word: different. An abridged run down of his aliases, alter egos, groups, protégés, collaborators and remixees (one who’s work has undergone Mauricification) is exhaustive. So let us surmise that if you walk into a decent record shop anywhere in the world you are likely to find at least a handful of records gracing his name. If not his name then one of his aliases, alter egos, groups…

It is important to note that Fulton has had a profound influence on dance music since leaving his hometown of Baltimore for New York in the early nineties (he had a hand in programming the percussion on Crystal Water’s smash hit Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless) back in 1991) and that he has seemingly managed to remain relatively unknown whilst doing so. Fulton rarely, if ever gives interviews due to a bad experience in which he was misquoted as dissing his friends. Information about him online is scarce. He is on Myspace but anyone with record label Tigersushi in their friend list ‘will NOT be added’ and he also has a facebook page but those eager to find out what is on his mind will be disappointed. It is fair to say then that there is a vague aura of the troubled, misunderstood genius about him though anyone who has seen his RBMA tutorial video will know him to be charming, funny, chilled and above all supremely talented.

It is testament to his talent that one struggles to pin down exactly what he is. He has been DJing since the age of 13 and all those years of practice have seen him get pretty good at it. He regularly gigs around the world and audience feedback is overwhelmingly positive. A prolific remixer, he will be the first to admit that a Fulton remix is not a remix but an entirely new track in itself. It is not uncommon for the end product to retain little more than the original vocal track with a new melody and rhythm laid down as the foundation.

He is a gifted musician with skills on keys and drums and is so good on bass he has managed to forge a sound all of his own. The unmistakable, flanged mutant slap bass he has been layering over tracks for the last few years has had househeads and disco enthusiasts alike wiggling and bumping on dance floors from Sydney to New York and everywhere in between. It is because a lot of his recent work is so accessibly funky that those only recently introduced to Fulton might blanche at some of his more leftfield output.

Herein lies the key to his longevity: Never compromise!

He has a penchant for working with female vocalists, mostly noveau soul singers and always head turningly attractive. A series of monthly podcasts offers the chance to hear him go wild on the decks and catch glimpses of material one suspects will sadly never see the light of day. That material which has already been released is plentiful and surprisingly for an artist so adroitly committed to playing by his own rules is mostly available online, though the less said about the infuriatingly rare Alice Smith remix the better. Recordings of his DJ sets get the pulse racing and have surely gotten many a bleary eyed clubber through the Monday morning commute to work whilst his home mixes are usually episodic journeys that will take your mind far away from the trials and tribulations us mortals have to deal with on a daily basis.

If you are not already convinced just read this response to a question regarding the idea for his track Paris Hilton : ‘The making of that record, I wanted to create something to make people dance and laugh at the same time, while they’re dancing. When someone told me that they’d never laughed so hard and danced at the same time it was a big compliment to me. It’s a really big compliment to me. I think dance songs, you should have fun and laugh and have a good time while listening to the song.’

You have been warned.

Francois K

—————————————-

Heres’ what Francois K said about Nightflight:

“Thanks so very much! You guys have a really great party going on.
I had a really wonderful time, and it looked to me like so did everyone else who turned up!

The venue has great, excellent acoustics and soundstage with little or no reflections. (this is so rare!). A tight, clear and distortion-free sound system, with engineer and staff that really know their stuff; No need to play loud.

And then…. a super-enthusiastic audience that kept wanting more, seems that they also really enjoyed the transitions, like playing some very electronic things right next to Voyage, and I just fell into gear throwing on whatever felt right, without much thinking about it. Such a lovely evening!

Now that I know what to expect, I think we can take it up another notch or two if I am invited back, including breaking out the really mad stuff.

Only negative: having to stop…..”.
